The trip is short or tightly scheduled — reaching Sumba adds a flight segment plus ground transfer on top of the Bali leg, transit time most itineraries don't budget for.

NIHI sits on Sumba Island's southwest coast in the Wanokaka district, on 567 acres of which only about 65 are developed — villas are individually designed and named (Wulla Marapu, Raja Puncak, Marangga Family Estate) rather than generic room categories. In front of the resort breaks Occy's Left, named for Australian surfer Mark Occhilupo — a powerful reef break with 200-300 metre rides, access capped at roughly 10 surfers a day for a $100 session fee, an unusual level of exclusivity for a break of this quality. The property was founded by Claude and Petra Graves, who first came to Sumba searching for surf in 1988, and soft-opened as Nihiwatu in 2001 after years negotiating land rights with tribal landowners. A 2012 acquisition by Chris Burch and James McBride led to a 2015 relaunch and rebrand to NIHI.

The NihiOka Spa Safari takes guests to a private cove via a 120-minute trek, 90-minute horse ride, or 15-minute safari vehicle, for treatments in open-air cliffside bales using local ingredients. The Sumba Foundation, founded in 2001 by Claude Graves and benefactor Sean Downs, runs the resort's community program — current foundation figures cite over 100 wells, roughly 48,000 people with improved clean-water access, and a reported 94% reduction in malaria cases in its service area, though these self-reported numbers have grown over time and should be read as current program figures rather than fixed facts. Travel + Leisure readers voted NIHI the World's #1 Hotel in both 2016 and 2017 — the only hotel to repeat at #1 in that poll.
Overview: Ombak functions as the main dining hub for breakfast. Nio Beach Club serves lunch in open-air pavilions next to the pool. Kaboku is the only fully indoor, climate-controlled dining room, evening only. Boathouse Bar is the central social/drinks venue. The Riding & Racquet Club has opened on the shores of Nihiwatu, combining an international tennis court and padel court with an oceanfront terrace. Draws on the existing horse program: wild horses from the "Sandalwood herd" range along 2.5km of Nihiwatu Beach; programming includes beach/trail riding, riding lessons, pony program, "Horse Yoga," and a "Swimming With Horses" experience. Nihioka Spa anchors wellness, including a "Spa Safari" program. Other experiences: ocean (surfing, snorkeling, paddleboarding), land (trekking, mountain biking, waterfalls), cultural (weaving, English classes with local students), culinary (cooking classes, floating breakfast). Sumba Foundation is the resort's philanthropic program.

Overview: NIHI Sumba's accommodation is entirely freestanding villas and estates spread across a bluff and beachfront site: no central hotel block, no published room-class hierarchy, and no square-meter dimensions published for any villa. Each villa carries an individual name, distinguished by bedroom count, elevation, and proximity to the beach or surf break. Raja Mandaka is the top-tier villa for uninterrupted ocean views. The Treehouse separates its three bedrooms into distinct structures joined by elevated walkways, with two swimming pools plus a private plunge pool in its spa room. Putri Puncak carries two infinity pools at the resort's high point. Pool arrangements vary; some villas share a plunge pool between two adjacent units, while others hold multiple pools. Every villa includes AC, Wi-Fi, an in-room yoga mat, and an assigned "Guest Kapten" (villa attendant). Total villa count is inconsistent across the site's own pages (31 versus 23 named units), a discrepancy that is flagged here rather than resolved by guessing.
