NIHI sits on Sumba Island's southwest coast in the Wanokaka district, on 567 acres of which only about 65 are developed — villas are individually designed and named (Wulla Marapu, Raja Puncak, Marangga Family Estate) rather than generic room categories. In front of the resort breaks Occy's Left, named for Australian surfer Mark Occhilupo — a powerful reef break with 200-300 metre rides, access capped at roughly 10 surfers a day for a $100 session fee, an unusual level of exclusivity for a break of this quality. The property was founded by Claude and Petra Graves, who first came to Sumba searching for surf in 1988, and soft-opened as Nihiwatu in 2001 after years negotiating land rights with tribal landowners. A 2012 acquisition by Chris Burch and James McBride led to a 2015 relaunch and rebrand to NIHI.
The NihiOka Spa Safari takes guests to a private cove via a 120-minute trek, 90-minute horse ride, or 15-minute safari vehicle, for treatments in open-air cliffside bales using local ingredients. The Sumba Foundation, founded in 2001 by Claude Graves and benefactor Sean Downs, runs the resort's community program — current foundation figures cite over 100 wells, roughly 48,000 people with improved clean-water access, and a reported 94% reduction in malaria cases in its service area, though these self-reported numbers have grown over time and should be read as current program figures rather than fixed facts. Travel + Leisure readers voted NIHI the World's #1 Hotel in both 2016 and 2017 — the only hotel to repeat at #1 in that poll.
NIHI Sumba has no tiered room-class system. Every accommodation is a standalone villa or multi-bedroom estate, distinguished by bedroom count and site rather than a Deluxe/Suite hierarchy.
