A couples' trip to Bali works best when the villa does the work a full itinerary usually does. Ubud's river-valley properties and the south coast's clifftop estates each hold a private pool, a walled compound, and a pace set by the two people staying there rather than a shared resort schedule.
We hold the villa first, timed to the April-to-October dry season, then arrange the one or two dinners worth leaving the compound for. Everything else -- the rice-terrace walk, the temple visit -- stays optional, fitted around the villa rather than competing with it.
